How it works

Up and running in three steps

Open NovaCam on your phone

It starts streaming right away and shows the address and PIN of your phone.

Start NovaCam Desktop

Your PC finds the phone automatically. Enter the PIN once and it connects. USB works too.

Pick “NovaCam” as your camera

In OBS add a Video Capture Device. In Zoom, Discord or Chrome, choose the camera named NovaCam.

Setup

Setting up the Windows companion

The camera driver is installed once. After that, it’s just open and go.

Once

First-time setup

  1. Unzip the whole folder anywhere and keep its contents together.
  2. Right-click install_driver.bat → Run as administrator (or double-click and press Yes). This installs the “NovaCam” camera and opens the firewall for phone discovery.
  3. Only for USB: run setup_adb.bat once (needs internet just for that download). On the phone turn on Developer options → USB debugging.
Every day

Using it

  1. Open the NovaCam app on the phone.
  2. Double-click NovaCam.exe, before OBS, Zoom or Chrome. With USB, allow the prompt on the phone. On Wi-Fi the phone is found automatically; otherwise press Scan network or type its IP and press Go.
  3. Enter the PIN shown on the phone the first time it asks.
  4. In OBS: Sources → + → Video Capture Device → NovaCam. In Zoom, Discord or Chrome, choose the camera NovaCam. If an app was already open when you installed, restart it.
Good to know: changing resolution or FPS recreates the camera, so select NovaCam again in your app afterwards. The Windows Camera app and the new Microsoft Teams may not list NovaCam because they only show modern camera drivers. NovaCam does appear in NVIDIA Broadcast, so you can use its virtual background too. To remove everything, run uninstall_driver.bat. If something goes wrong, a file called novacam_error.log appears next to NovaCam.exe; email it to us.
FAQ

Questions, answered

Does it need internet?

No. The phone and PC only need to be on the same network (Wi-Fi, a hotspot, a router without internet) or connected by USB. Internet is only needed once if you choose to download the USB helper, and for the ads in the phone app.

Who can see my video?

Only computers on your network that know the PIN shown in the app. Your video goes from your phone to your own computer. It is never uploaded to us and we have no servers or accounts. See the Privacy Policy.

Is the stream encrypted?

The stream is protected by a PIN, but it travels over your local network without encryption, like most phone-webcam apps. Use it on networks you trust, or connect with USB.

Why is the background effect paused sometimes?

Effects use the GPU and warm the phone. When the battery gets too hot, NovaCam pauses the effect automatically (the app tells you) and resumes when the phone cools. Charging while streaming makes it warmer, so Battery Saver and hiding the preview help.

Does it work with OBS, Zoom, Discord and Chrome?

Yes, any app that can use a normal Windows camera can pick “NovaCam”. For OBS you can also use the phone’s stream address directly in a Media Source. The Windows Camera app and the new Microsoft Teams may not list it.

What about the ad in the phone app?

NovaCam for Android is free and shows a small banner ad. It supports Google’s privacy choices where they apply, and you can change them later from the Info screen.
